چکیده

Electroconvulsive therapywas comparedwithimipramine inthe treatment of endogenous depression in a double blind randomized controlled trial. Both treatments produced equally significant improvement which was equally maintained till theendofsixmonths.HoweverECT produceditseffects quicker with lesser subjective side effects to the patient. ECT did not cause any organic brain dysfunction as assessed at the end of three and six months.

Effects of Lidocaine on the Acute Hemodynamic Response to Electroconvulsive Therapy

ABSTRACT Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been used widely to treat psychiatric disease. ECT under anesthesia is associated with hypertension and tachycardia. The cardiovascular effects of ECT were studied after per-treatment of 100 patients with lidocaine 1.5 mg/Kg (experimental group) and saline solution (control), using a double-blind, randomized clinical trial study. There were no sign...

Sixty patients of endogenous depression and thirty normal controls were studied to find out the relationship of post dexamethasone plasma Cortisol levels (PDPC) and clinical improvement of endogenous depression inpatients treated with electroconvulsive therapy and imipramine. The PDPC levels in both the group of patients showed significant decrease with clinical improvement (Pre and post treatm...

Initial Response to Ect as a Predictor of Outcome in Endogenous Depression

In a double-blind, prospective study, 29 patients with endogenous depression were treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The degree of attenuation in Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression scores after the first ECT was compared between ECT responders and non-responders at the end of the treatment course; a significant difference was obtained, indicating higher initial response in ECT resp...

Amoxapine: a review of its pharmacology and efficacy in depressed states.

Amoxapine is an N-demethylated dibenzoxazepine closely related in the neuroleptic loxapine. Its tricyclic structure appears to give it antidepressant properties resembling imipramine and amitriptyline. In uncontrolled trials it was shown to have antidepressant activity in usual doses up to 200 to 400mg daily. In placebo and double-blind controlled studies comparing amoxapine with the standard t...

The effect of electroconvulsive therapy on the levels of oxidative stress factors in the prefrontal cortex of depressed rats

Background and Objective: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one of the effective and less complicated methods for treatment of depression in cases of resistance to common treatments. Given the fundamental role of pre-frontal cortex on changing the mood of depression-related behaviors in depressed patients, the effects of electroconvulsive therapy on enzymatic activity of this cortex were taken...
